Sandra Myers

DMD

Sandra Myers is a tenured Associate Professor in the School of Dentistry, where she manages a research laboratory focusing on the emissions of mercury from dental amalgam during cremation. Her background in dentistry includes the completion of formal educational programs in dental assisting, dental hygiene, dentistry, and oral pathology.

A current research passion, since 2006, has been partnering with the University of Minnesota Programs in Mortuary Science and Anatomy Bequest, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Minnesota Funeral Directors Association, on quantifying mercury emissions resulting from the cremation of dental amalgam in Minnesota.

Additionally, she has been the Director of the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research’s TMJ Implant Repository since its inception. The repository, and affiliated patient registry, was developed with a $5.9 million dollar National Institutes of Health supported contract grant between 2002 and 2007.

Dr. Myers has numerous publications and has lectured extensively to dental students and professionals at all levels. In addition to environmental issues related to mercury, she has a passion for oral pathology, histopathology of the temporomandibular joint and teaching, as evidenced by numerous teaching awards throughout her career.
